Each cohort of the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program is diverse; no two candidates are equally strong on all criteria, and students may demonstrate different strengths in different ways. As candidates are evaluated and selected to win these scholarships for master's degrees at Stanford, the university looks for evidence of three criteria:

- Newly enrolled fellows receive a one-time relocation stipend intended to offset some of the costs associated with relocating to the area and/or technology purchases.
- Scholars in their second and third year may apply for supplemental funds to support academic enrichment activities (e.g., conference travel).
